Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,
who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.
For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses–as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.
(For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.)
Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,
but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,
where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years.
Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’
As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.'”
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
Faith is an age long principle of God; it still continued in the law. From this scripture, we might want to ask how unbelief is in relation with the law because they were not expected to believe the law but to do it. So, what is the place of unbelief? Using the word unbelief typifies the presence of belief. So, God told Moses to bring them close to Him but the people declined, telling Moses to hear God instead. Moses was to bring them close, not to be their Lord.
They were supposed to make movement to a Mount; Mount Sinai was a physical representation of what the Mount is. Jesus said come unto me o ye that labour. There will always be a movement. You must come, not a leg walk but a heart coming. It was at this juncture that it was discovered that the Isrealites had no faith, but their legs moved. God does not expect physical leg movement but a heart movement. He interacts better with the heart than with the body. This testimony is not actually a new thing, it is new because we are the one just coming into it.
They went astray in their hearts because they have not known the way of the Lord. It is in the heart that ways are made. John the Baptist was to prepare the way of the Lord and the way the Lord wants to walk through is the heart of men. This is also where the Lord places His name and where He wants to be worshipped-that is His temple. The temple in Israel at a point in time was Herod’s temple and it had every other material except the ark. All Israelites were supposed to move yearly to Jerusalem. Every spiritual person is expected to move. It is not a movement of receiving of the hand of God that meets one where he is but a movement of the receiving of the face. When a heart is darkened or blind, it will go towards the world and always seek things of the hand and the natural. But once one’s heart is enlightened and sight restored, such heart will long for the Lord and will always want to migrate towards the Lord. Such heart takes movement towards the Lord because it has been given sight and called to come. No one can come if he has not been called. The Lord gives rest to all who will come and that rest starts from the heart because ways are charted in the heart first.
What guarantees God’s presence is the ark of covenant- the testimony. God’s presence was not in the temple, so though people gather there, they were not doing that unto the Lord, they were gathering unto the Pharisees and Sadducees instead of the Lord not knowing His presence was no longer there but with John in the wilderness because He was God’s bidding at the time. Once the testimony is not in a place, God’s presence will no longer be there.
There is a need to pray for the body of Christ; for those who were meant to be pillars but who stood in the place of God to take sacrifice from the sheep. The voice came in Jordan loud and clear endorsing Jesus as His Son. When Jesus died, an earthquake shook the earth proving God right and tore the curtain covering the holiest of all to reveal the secret of the holy of holies making it known to all that there is nothing inside and that all may go in. The sign that day showed that God was no longer in the temple but inside Jesus reconciling men unto Himself. Anyone who therefore wants rest should come to Jesus. That a man who has been used to rote memorization, recitation and religiosity can agree and come into the waters to be baptized believing that once he does that and believe in Jesus, his sin is washed away is great faith. This kind is what the Israelites lacked and God sworn that they will not enter into His rest. They are stiff-necked people who cannot turn, so God’s anger stayed with that generation and he sworn in his wrath not to bring them in. This happens today in our churches. People do not believe God for the unseen but can exercise faith for healing, provision and all other natural thing. God hates this. He wants men who will believe Him for the unseen, who will seek him not for things but to know Him.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
What is the benefit of knowing God?
so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Knowing brings a conception and a birthing. ’ …and Abraham knew his wife and…’ They that diligently seek God to know Him will definitely find him. This knowledge births God Himself in a man like in Jesus.
It takes mercy to know. God wants to produce His kind which is exactly as he is. He wants to make us Spirits. When a man knows his wife, there is conception. That knowing is not head knowledge but an intercourse of experience. It is not bible study but an encounter; a heart to heart experience. Knowing brings confidence. A wife who knows her husband will not be afraid of her husband’s whereabouts even at the face of gossip. It is a knowing. When we know God, nothing will move us. There is beauty in knowing.’ …I know my redeemer liveth.’ When a knowing comes, it leads to conception and birthing. We need to come to knowing. God does not have a favorite and special agenda for some people. His agenda daily is to attend to those who pull Him. DO YOU PULL GOD? Faith is the way. When this is built up in your heart, a testimony is built. This testimony brings a confidence and when you open your mouth to speak, the testimony speaks and wherever you get to, that testimony radiates all over you.
Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
There are things to be endured for the testimony to be birthed. Confidence in Hebrews there is an assurance of Faith. Faith is a confidence. It is this confidence we are to hold firm at all times. This means there are things that could make us want to drop the testimony to hold other things. Those who the devil killed and those who overcame in the book of Revelation are those who held on to the testimony of Jesus. We cannot claim we are going in to God and not go through the way of Faith, where we go through trials yet our confidence is not lost. We keep on believing and as we move on daily, confidence is built. God expects us not to be distracted. If we have laid hold on this confidence, then we take it wherever we are, into whatever we do: marriage, work, school, career, family, etc.
God is the builder of that house in Hebrews 3. Moses was a servant in the house doing the Will of God and qualified as a prophet. In that same house is another prophet who is a Son. Moses’ service after undergoing inspection was supposed to produce the testimony of Jesus Christ. There are things God prides in. Moses was supposed to serve with a hope that another is coming as a Son. It was like John the Baptist too who was sent ahead to prepare a safe landing for the Lord. These prophets have gone beyond thou shall not, likewise the disciples, they just followed Christ at His call instead of going to the temple. It was easy for them to follow because John had done a good job on the path. And when the suffering comes, we are to endure. John had to be collapsed for Jesus to be relevant and that was ordained. John was not foolish neither was God wicked; he had to be collapsed for a new building to arise like the temple cloth was rent to start a new life. Jesus now is the well pleasing one. He too got to the garden and cried out for help unto his Father when He saw the suffering ahead of him but he endured.
We are to trust God because as we move on the enemy is being judged and the testimony is becoming grounded in us
“The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers–it is to him you shall listen–
Christ is more relevant than any other prophet and is always new each day. But the Jews do not know this so they rejected Christ and stayed with the sayings of Moses, so the Lord judged them because they missed the day of their visitation. This prophet that Moses was prophesying about speaks to heart with His voice and brings the testimony.
Today in that Hebrews talks about another era, a new realm, something new, a higher realm, a different economy. As Christ speaks and we can hear, Faith is generated in us.
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
There is a particular hearing that must come out of the word that you hear. ‘Once has God spoken, twice have I heard.’ There are two hearings there. Not all who come to church hears God, and once you cannot hear, you cannot know and cannot handle the testimony. There is a need for us to move from the first hearing to the second, it is then we can have light.
They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
The end of the testimony is that we may live. A light is to come out of the testimony and lighten anyone who comes before it, like it always lightens the priest and the whole Israel, fighting for them even at battle. No one knows the power that raised Christ up; no one knows what happened in the belly of the earth for three days but out of there comes victory over death and light to lighten all men. The opposite of the testimony is evil before God and cannot please God. We need to hear to bear the testimony. We will hear the voice of the testimony telling us the way to go; we will hear and walk in it. The testimony will guide our way, lead us and we will follow. Halleluyah!
